Location and Influence Area: |
|
Matarani, located some 452 miles South from Callao, serves the
South Peruvian Region (Arequipa, Moquegua, Cuzco and Puno) as
well as the Bolivian cities of Santa Cruz, Cochabamba and Oruro,
La Paz and Potosí.
|
 |
|
The
port was given in concession to the private operators Terminal
Internacional del Sur S.A. (TISUR) back in 1,999. Since then,
TISUR has developed and constantly increased the transit of
Bolivian cargoes through its terminal, in direct competition
with Arica
in Chile. Its influence area is expected to increase when the
several integration projects with Brasil and Bolivia will be
materialized.

| Port
Description: |
|
The
port is small with a little difficult entry access, protected
by 2 breakwaters, being the South one about 650 mtrs. long and
the short extension to the North of about 140 mtrs. The entrance
channel is 145 mtrs. wide and 45 ft depth. The depth inside the
turning basin is of 36ft with an average of 32ft alongside. For
vessels exceeding 190 mtrs. LOA and 30mtrs. Beam, the berth 1-C
should be free for night time berthing.
|
 |
| Port
Restrictions: (see
official restrictions) |
Official
restrictions given by Tisur (Port Administration) are 32'00"
SW maximum draft and maximum LOA of 190.00 mtrs. However, vessels
up to 202 mts. LOA and 32'06" SW draft can be handled at
high tide only. Please feel free in contact
us for additional details.

 |
| Port
Infrastructure: |
|
The
so called "marginal wharf" has approximately 450 meters
of berthing space with a 20.15 mtrs of working apron. There are
4 berths called A, B, C and D West to East.
|
 |
| |
Pier
1-A this pier is well protected from swell, used to discharge
grain cargo, sulfuric acid and loading of bagged cargo. Grains
can
be discharged using port suction towers (there are two towers
available). However, discharge can be also performed using ship´s
cranes and grabs simultaneously with port towers. At the Western
end of
this berth there is a ramp for Ro-Ro vessels. |
|
|
 |
|
 |
| |
Pier
1-B (multipurpose berth) is mainly employed for discharge of
grains, fertilizers, bagged cargoes (fishmeal, soja bean) as well
as liners and vehicles operations. |
|
 |
|
| |
Pier
1-C vessels loading fishmeal and mineral concentrates, as well
as discharging coal and other dirty cargoes are assigned to this
place. |
 |
|
Concentrates
are loaded by means of conveyor belt which comes from the depot
situated at alto Matarani (50 mtrs. above sea level) and abt 800
mtrs away from the main gate. The conveyor end can be shifted
in a range of about 80 to 90 mtrs, for which bigger vessels have
to be shifted during loading in order to reach extreme holds.
|
 |
| Pilotage:
|
| Compulsory.
Pilots board approximately 1 mile from breakwater. |
 |
| Tugs: |
|
2 tugs compulsory for vessesls exeding 120 mts LOA. |

Warehouse / Storaged Capacity: |
|
Matarani
port operator "TISUR" concluded works on new silos /
discharge system named "SISTEAGRO", which has entered
on partial operation as form November 2002. The capacity of new
silos is approximately 25,000 metric tons, thereby increasing
total grain capacity up to 75,000 MT. The new system allows to
operate vessels with grabs directly into trucks, which then release
cargo into silos by means of two grids. The grids are designed
to allow two trucks discharging simultaneously into the underground
belts which move the grains directly to the new silos.
