Port Location and Influence Area:
The port of San Nicolás is an Iron Ore loading facility operated by Shougang-Hierro Perú, the main Peruvian iron mine, which is located at San Juan de Marcona, some 20 kmrs. To the South of the port. The finger pier is of easy access as is located over the South coast of the San Nicolás Bay, in a clean and deep area, suitable for cape size vessels.
Port Restrictions: (see official restrictions)
Port Infrastructure:
The pier is 327.60 mtrs. Long and has an extension mooring dolphin (15 mtrs. Diam.) for the stern lines of panamax and capers. The pier is 15 mtrs. wide and has berth available at either side. However, due to its loading belt conveyor, only general cargo is allowed on the East side.
The West side is used to load vessels of up to 320 Mtrs. LOA and 240,000 DWT. Ships are loaded by means of a conveyor belt (ore loader) on gantry on rails, which runs almost all the pier length, to avoid shifting of vessels during loading.
Pilotage:
Compulsory for all vessels. Pilots boarding area is approximately 1 mile North of mooring dolphin. Vessels are moored by means of their own engines and anchors, which are dropped abeam of dolphin were an "anchor pocket" is available (see mooring diagram).
Working Hours:
The port operates 24 hrs/day SHINC, i.e. from 07:00-16:00/16:00-24:00/00:00-07:00 hrs.
